April, 2010: Four Friends of the Foundation go to the top of the world to support the children!
In April this year, three businessmen Roger Best, Martin Hills and Chris Coulcher along with Craig Adams, a pilot with Dragonair, decided to do a sponsored walk for charity. Battling through the volcanic ash from Iceland, Chris only just managed to make it from London to join the others in Kathmandu and then on to Lukla. The flight from Kathmandu to Lukla took them 30 minutes and gave amazing views of the Himalayas as they flew low through the mountains. Then suddenly, they were diving through a hole in the clouds and were faced with the shortest runway they had ever seen! The plane slammed down and full brakes and reverse thrust brought them to a halt in front of the side of a mountain at the end of the runway!

Then, battling thinning air, a diet of dal bhat (lentil soup and boiled rice), spartan accommodations and freezing nights the intrepid foursome and their Sherpa guide set out on an 18 day trek to Everest Base Camp at 5360m. Walking up to eight hours a day they were surrounded by the most spectacular mountain scenery in the world. On the second day they were rewarded with their first incredible glimpse of Mt. Everest and that night made the hard ascent to Namche Bazaar; a market town perched high on a mountain which is the gateway for all the famous expeditions to Everest. Day ten was the big day, up whilst it was still dark, they left their lodge and trekked a rocky, glacial trail and with a huge sense of achievement arrived at Everest Base Camp. Amazingly, despite the intrepid trekkers climbing over 5,480m to Gokyo Ri, not one of them suffered from altitude sickness. CONGRATULATIONS to the team on their incredible achievement and a HUGE thank you to all of their sponsors for the amazing donation from the trek of 400,000 baht! Everyone at the Foundation feels on the top of the world due to your generosity.
